Mirra Alfassa, known as The Mother, had organized the followers of Sri Aurobindo into the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, and originated the idea of the universal township. with her blessings, the idea was taken up by the Sri Aurobindo Society and along with the Indian government. The community was founded in February 1968, but the actual construction was started at 21 st February 1972. The project's name is a combination of two French words, aurore for "dawn" and ville for "city". It is also referred to Sri Aurobindo's name.

The Matrimandir

The Matrimandir is both the physical and spiritual center. Matrimandir, in Sanskrit, means "Temple of the Divine Mother". This place is called so because of that.  Its inner chamber is meant to be a place , even, i call it as a palace of silence, for concentration, and to avoid any ritual, where anyone can sit to meditate in silence. No restrictions to any human being who really want the peace and comes here for meditation. it is such a place where you can , i found , the disturbances and the oscillations of the mind inspite of the construction sounds. I was able to realize the extent my mind has got the disturbances. but, soon i was able to enjoy myself the peace.

Physically, the Matrimandir is a 100-foot-high sphere resting on four pillars. Each pillar represents an aspect of the Divine Mother: Wisdom, Strength, Harmony, Perfection. The Matrimandir is surrounded by a network of gardens and a lake.

In the matrimandir, we have to follow the line , that is the queue, because that was still under construction. The hall was of little bit noisy due to the construction activities. But, the rest of the areas were pretty silent and good for meditation.

The Amphitheatre

The term Amphitheatre means a levelled open space, that is oval in shape which gradually ascends. In greek, "Amphi" is for "Double" .




We really enjoyed the Auroville, we have never before gone to such a calm place. Absolute silence everywhere, i really liked it.
